ABOUT THE MAKER | leah desai
Combining her low waste lifestyle and passion for all things colorful, Leah started Grace is Awake in 2018. She designs and hand dyes one of a kind textiles using natural dyes derived from sustainably sourced, chemical free materials - including food scraps, homegrown plants and other found and foraged items in her neighborhood, Brooklyn, NY. Items are handcrafted using up cycled, natural textiles (locally sourced, unwanted fabric cut offs). Each piece has been carefully designed and hand dyed using Japanese Shibori resist dyeing techniques.
Grace is Awake linen bread bags are crafted from up cycled 100% linen fabric with cotton rope drawstring closures. They’re hand dyed using natural, plant based indigo dye and traditional Japanese Shibori manual resist dyeing techniques.
MAINTENANCE + INFO | natural dyes
Fabrics dyed naturally are free of toxins and other chemicals that can pollute the environment and irritate our skin. Natural dyes are pH sensitive and sensitive to extreme prolonged sun exposure, they do take a bit of care to maintain - wash gently or by hand in cold water with a gentle, natural or pH-neutral detergent. Hang dry, steam iron as needed.
Imperfections and variations are part of the natural dyeing process and make these pieces unique. Natural dyes provide living color that, similar to your favorite t-shirt, will fade and change overtime. We think these unique traits make our items imperfectly perfect!
